The
Epidural Steroid Injection is a procedure where numbing
medicine (anesthetic) and anti-inflammatory medicine
(steroid is injected into the epidural space to treat
pain caused by irritation of the spinal nerves.
A small needle is placed into
the epidural space to deliver anesthesia (numbing
medicine).
X-ray is used to help with
proper positioning.
Still using X-ray, the physician
guides a larger needle to the painful area.
Contrast dye is injected into
the space to make sure the needle is in proper position.
After proper placement is determined,
a combination of an anesthetic and cortisone steroid
solution is injected into the epidural space. The
steroid is an anti-inflammatory medication that is
absorbed by the inflamed nerves to decrease swelling
and relieve pressure.
Once the Injection is completed
the needle is removed.
