The
Cervical Facet Joint Injection is a procedure used
to block or decrease pain caused by problems in the
upper (neck area) spine. Cervical facet joints, which
are not much larger than your thumbnail, are located
on either side of each vertebrae.
A local anesthetic is applied
to numb the skin and the tissue down to the facet.
Using X-ray the doctor inserts
a needle into the facet joint. The correct placement
of the needle is confirmed by injecting contrast dye
into the joint.
When satisfied with the needle
position, the doctor will inject a small mixture of
numbing medicine (anesthetic) and anti-inflammatory
medicine (cortisone/steroid) to treat the inflamed
facet.
Once the Injection is completed
the needle is removed. Immediately after the procedure,
you will move your neck to determine if you still
have your usual pain.
